Two Dynamic Sessions:Session 1: The Skills Gap – How Business Can Bridge the Skills GapIn the November, 2011 issue of US News and World Report there was an article that asked “Are Employers to Blame for the Skills Gap?” This article summarized numerous recent surveys that have been conducted by various organizations, representing all sides of this question. The main point in the article is that these surveys show that (1) We have many jobs available in the US economy, we just don’t have workers with the right skills to fill them, (2) Employers report that the biggest impediment to growth is being able to find qualified people to fill their job openings, (3) Workers indicate that they are under pressure to gain additional skills to stay current in their current roles, but 79% report they are left to their own resources to find the appropriate training. This learning session will examine what employers can do to bridge the skills gap. The session is designed to address this issue from a human resources and training perspective. After attending this session the participant will be able to: • Explain the skills gap in relation to business strategy and why it is important to bridge the skills gap. • Identify strategies that can be implemented to bridge the skills gap. • Examine best practices and case studies of organizations that have had some success in implementing programs with results. • Identify the skills gap in their own organization • Identify the right balance between formal and informal resources. Biography of Speaker Denise Reading Session 2: Motivating the New WorkforceThe key to motivating employees has been written about, surveyed and discussed for a very long time and by just about everybody. Over the years, several theories surrounding this issue of what is the reward that employees value enough to be motivated to go above and beyond, is still a mystery. Some say it is pay, some say it is praise and recognition, some say it is culture and a sense of belonging, many insist it is a total reward package. There is one thing that we know for sure…..there is no magic bullet. There is no singular reward system that can reach every person in our diverse workplace. We also know that the demographics of the American workplace is changing and will continue to change as we move forward. We are moving to a workplace that is multi-generational, has more women, and more minorities. This learning session is designed to discuss how the change and diversity in employees attitudes and approaches to work will also change the way in which reward systems need to be designed. This session will focus on motivation from the standpoint of reward and recognition programs. After attending this session the participants will be able to: • Explain how the demographics of the American workplace is changing. • Identify the changing demographics in their own organization. • Examine strategies and best practices as a means to develop reward systems that bring results.
